Global
Positioning System Explained at Meeting
By Frank Licari
We held our first meeting at the Long Island
Maritime Museum, April 14, 2002. This location
can be our future home for meetings staged by the
eastern sector of our club.
The museums meeting room was more than
adequate for the 35 members in attendance. There
is room for at lest twice this number and the
settings and surroundings are pleasant and
interesting. This site was sought due to security
restrictions in effect at Gabreski Airport which
has terminated our use of their facility. The
strategic location of the museum is midway
between the east and west contingents, which will
most likely lead to greater attendance from each
sector. It was good to see many from the western
sector in attendance.
At this meeting, we had a guest speaker
Mr. George Dzenkowski who presented an
informative and comprehensive disseration on the
navigation on airplanes, boats, and even car, and
as I see it for old codgars who
forget where they live or get lost in the
immediate area of their homes.
In a serious vein, Mr. Dzenkowski was well
equipped with reference circulars which he handed
out, and his video and verbal presentation made
the time well spent in the session. If one is not
already proficient in the use of the GPS, he or
she is not going to learn its use in one session,
but the presentation will serve as a means of
stirring interest and as an instrument for
opening-the-door for mastering its use.
