From
the Montauk L.I. Star,
May 14, 1920
The demolishment of the big Navy air camp at
Montauk is about completed, all of smaller wooded
buildings having been moved away or torn down and
workers from the U.S. Steel and Iron Works,
Pittsburgh, have about finished dismantling the
dirigible hanger. Already seven carloads of the
iron structure have been shipped.
I.Y. Halsey had dismantled the seaplane hangar
and moved most of it to his garages at East
Hampton and Southampton, where he will use the
material in making additions.
The large dirigible hanger will be moved to Cape
May, NJ where it will be added to another of
about the same size and the entire structure
raised several feet, making the largest dirigible
hangar in the United States.
The Montauk Naval Air Station, during its
existence, maintained the highest record for
flying hours of any of the camps along the coast
and we have heard that it was the best
constructed and equipped station.
